Snæfellsjökull Glacier

The Snæfellsjökull glacier sits at the Western edge of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Snæfellsjökull sits on top of a volcano that last erupted 800 years ago. The Snæfellsjökull glacier is endangered. Some experts predicting another 15 years before it is gone. Below the glacier is a mighty volcano which last erupted in almost 2000 years ago. These glacier activities could be among the last in this area. The views from the summit are breathtaking if conditions are clear.

The meeting points for the glacier hikes are about 2.5 hours drive from Reykjavik.

Snæfellsjökul Summit hike This tour is for adventure tourists who literally need to be at the top. You should book this tour if peaks and beautiful views are what you’re after. This is a fulfilling summit adventure hike with great sense of achievement as we summit Snæfellsjökull Glacier at 1446 meters.

  • Physically Demanding

This hike can only be booked as a private tour from Meeting Point B. You can take a shuttle or snowcat as far as you like. Your and the guide will plan the hike early in the morning depending on weather conditions. The conditions can vary from knee-deep powder snow to blue ice. We will supply crampons, snowshoes and ski gear if needed or requested.

Snæfellsjökull glacier hikeThis glacier hike is our short and popular. You can experience the magical nature of Snæfellsjökull glacier on this tour. The hike is for those looking for an unspoiled experience with nature. We often stop on the hike to take in the great views over the Snæfellsnes Peninsula on one side and the glacier summit on the other side.

  • Moderately physical

The hike starts at our office (Meeting Point B). We issue crampons and boots then we drive our shuttle up around 750m on Snæfellsjökull glacier. We put on crampons and hike up to the ice at an easy pace to around 880m where we can see crevasses, moulins and ice formations on the route.

Midnight sun glacier hikeThis Midnight Sun Glacier Hike is an experience of a lifetime. The vistas over Breiðafjörður Bay, and Snæfellsnes peninsula in the magical midnight sun makes this tour our most scenic hike. We stop for plenty of photo opportunities on the North Summit before our hike back.

  • Duration: 5 hours
  • Physically demanding

The tour start at our office (Meeting Point B). To start we drive to our snowcat at 1000m. Then we hike up to Snæfellsjökull glacier’s North Summit during the sunset.

The hike is quite relaxed but does require average or above average fitness. We may use snowshoes or crampons depending on conditions.
