Auroras & Ice Caves

Aurora & Ice Cave Photo Workshop

Skarpi & friend’s have been offering the Aurora & Ice Photo Workshops for the past five years.  They have got the Vatnjokull area of Iceland fully covered. The amazing Northern Lights and the incredible Ice Caves that you find in many of Iceland’s Glaciers are the main focus of this photo workshop.

We make photo stops at top locations of Iceland. For example, Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Reynisfjara Beach and Jokulsarlon Lagoon on the South Coast. These places are stunning.  You might recognise them from movies, TV and online nature photographers. The stark Winter landscape makes these places more beautiful to photograph and a perfect setting for Aurora photography.

We will visit lesser known sites along with the incredible Ice Caves. New caves moulded by the glaciers every year. So we explore new caves to photograph.

The Aurora & Ice Cave Photo Workshop will help you improve your photography skills in amazing locations. Our small groups of eight people gives everyone one2one time with our skilled photo instructors. We welcome photographers of all levels, from beginners to advanced. This is a great photo workshop for an introduction to Iceland.

Day one – Arrival

You arrive at Keflavík International Airport & transfer to Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík. If you get here early, you can photograph Reykjavik’s landmarks such as Harpa Concert Hall, Hallgrims church, Sun Voyager & Perlan.

In the evening we go over safety considerations and the workshop plan in an Icelandic restaurant.

Day two –  Thingvellir – Vik

After an early start from Reykjavik, we drive straight to our first photo location at Thingvellir where our photography adventure begins. Then we head to the south coast, which has many famous waterfalls and coastlines in Iceland, such as Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Reynisdrangar and Dyrholaey.

We will stay overnight in the small village of Vik.

Day three & four – Vatnajokull

Soon after breakfast, you will have the chance to photograph the sunrise on the ice Beach near Jokulsarlon. We will capture the Vatnjokull area with plenty of photo locations to choose from over the next couple of days. Our hotel is close to Jokulsarlon so when the sky is clear and Aurora is active we shoot the Northern Lights dancing over the lagoon. We will enter two ice caves on the tour at least. The best available ice caves are deep under the Vatnajökull glacier. We will provide you with all safety gear such as helmets and crampons.

Day five  – Hofn Vestrahorn

Vestrahorn mountain is a 454 meter peak with fascinating geology. To the East is Brunnahorn (Batman Mountain) stretching out to sea. Vestrahorn is a fantastic photography subject with a vast choice of interesting foregrounds from the sand tussocks to the rocky coastline. In Winter we often get amazing light on the mountain face.

We visit Skaftafell twice. Once on our way to the south-east and again on the drive back. We’ll photograph some of the fantastic landscapes and include a sunset. The whole Skaftafell area has incredible views such as the glaciers and Iceland’s highest mountains. Waterfalls such as Svartifoss can be photographed in the park.

Day seven – Golden Circle – Reykjavik

We have breakfast at our hotel in Vík, then shoot sunrise on the black beach. We then explore the Golden Circle and drive back to Reykjavik. We will make a few photography stops on our way, and then have a final dinner together in Reykjavik.
