North Iceland Summer

Summer: North Iceland photo tour

This Summer Iceland photo tour cuts a big ‘S’ shaped curve through the middle of Iceland. Vast stony deserts with mountain tracks designed by Whiskey drinkers lead to Iceland’s wildest geothermal hot-spots. Don’t forget your bathing costume because there are opportunities to soak in Geothermal pools. Feel the ground tremble next to Europe’s most powerful waterfall. Cast your material possessions into the waterfall of the Gods and experience the best Whale Watching in Iceland from fabulous Husavik (original home of the Penis Museum).

Kerlingarfjöll

Seasons: Running only from mid June to mid September (and can be subject to change).

Timings: The photo tour could start in the afternoon in mid June. This trip could involve shooting through the night hours (22.00-06.00) and sleeping in tents during the day. Reverting to regular hours in August. Accommodation in hotels and guesthouses for non-campers. The itinerary can be entirely flexible. 6 days is the suggested time frame. It could be extended by 2 days or reduced by 1 day, doing the photo tour in less than 5 days would be challenging.

Locations and activities:

We start with an evening tour of Geysir and Gullfoss before driving on Iceland’s notorious Kjöllurvegur. This is a rough mountain road which connects the North and South during the summer months. On Kjöllurvegur we have 2 impressive stops at the geothermal mountains of Kelingarfjöll and the hot-spring oasis of Hveravellir. We camp at either of these.

We then have 5 full nights to explore the best locations in the North. Our Iceland photo tour visits huge waterfalls such as Dettifoss which works well with the sunrise. Ancient geological wonders such as Asbyrgi also work beautifully in the morning hours. We can experience some wild furmerals and boiling mud as well as relax in the Geothermal baths around Lake Myvatn.

Iceland Summer oasis

Experiencing sunrises at these places can be hugely inspiring and if we are camping we can follow the best of the midnight sun.

Suggested duration 5 days (can be extended or reduced).

Accommodation: Mid summer may involve camping in tents. Hotel accommodation should be selected for tour end of August through September.
