{"id":5942,"date":"2016-05-29T14:07:14","date_gmt":"2016-05-29T14:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icelandaurora.com\/tours\/?p=5942"},"modified":"2023-11-19T12:18:45","modified_gmt":"2023-11-19T12:18:45","slug":"vattarnes-east-coastline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/vattarnes-east-coastline\/","title":{"rendered":"Vattarnes East Iceland Coastline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eastfjords of Iceland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A trip around the East Fjords of Iceland can be rewarding for the photographer, with many coastal scenes and gentle mountains inland.\u00a0 It is not a great place for drivers in a hurry.\u00a0 Every road is winding, and going in and out of the fjords takes some time.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most fjords have towns on their northern shores.\u00a0 I guess this is to get sunlight during the shorter winter days.\u00a0 Maybe it also protects against the Norwegian winds coming from the north. <\/p>\n\n\n<ins class=\"bookingaff\" data-aid=\"2226802\" data-target_aid=\"2226802\" data-prod=\"map\" data-width=\"100%\" data-height=\"590\" data-lang=\"ualng\" data-dest_id=\"0\" data-dest_type=\"landmark\" data-latitude=\"64.9242776\" data-longitude=\"-13.6845807\" data-landmark_name=\"Vattarnes\" data-mwhsb=\"0\" data-address=\"Vattarnes Sea cliffs, Vattarnesvegur, Iceland\" data-zoom=\"10\">\r\n    <!-- Anything inside will go away once widget is loaded. -->\r\n        <a href=\"\/\/www.booking.com?aid=2226802\">Booking.com<\/a>\r\n<\/ins><script>\r\n\r\n    (function(d, sc, u) {\r\n      var s = d.createElement(sc), p = d.getElementsByTagName(sc)[0];\r\n      s.type = 'text\/javascript';\r\n      s.async = true;\r\n      s.src = u + '?v=' + (+new Date());\r\n      p.parentNode.insertBefore(s,p);\r\n      })(document, 'script', '\/\/cf.bstatic.com\/static\/affiliate_base\/js\/flexiproduct.js');\r\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">F\u00e1skr\u00fa\u00f0sfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>About half way up the east coast is\u00a0F\u00e1skr\u00fa\u00f0sfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.\u00a0 Most visitors to the area will welcome the tunnel, which takes you through to Rey\u00f0arfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur in about 15 minutes, but if you want the best from the area, avoid the tunnel and continue through F\u00e1skr\u00fa\u00f0sfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fishing village has an old connection with France, and you will see French and Icelandic flags fluttering together.\u00a0 The streets have both French and Icelandic names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\" id=\"attachment_4370\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_2679-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"East Iceland Coast\" class=\"wp-image-4370\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Facing South at the end of the F\u00e1skr\u00fa\u00f0sfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Coastline<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after leaving F\u00e1skr\u00fa\u00f0sfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Village, you will find some opportunities to get close to the coast before the road goes uphill.&nbsp; The volcanic coastline bears the scars of both glaciers and the ocean.&nbsp; After driving up a hill, there is a chance to stop at a viewpoint.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a nice view from here across to the mountains of the fjords north and south and out to the several islands that sit in the ocean like sunken mountains.&nbsp; The most prominent island is Skr\u00fa\u00f0ur, which is home to large puffin colonies. On the tip of the peninsula, the road becomes quite high with a steep drop as it winds its way around the cliff edge.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the cliffs, the road goes downhill with a view of distant mountainous landscapes to the north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you reach a plateau, you will see some large boulders which you can hike through to the sea cliffs.&nbsp; The cliffs here are about 20 meters and this is probably the best view of Skr\u00fa\u00f0ur (the volcanic island that sits 1 km off shore).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photo-galleries\/east-coast-cliffs\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/DragonEast.jpg\" alt=\"Vattarnes Coastline\" class=\"wp-image-82490\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Click to order a print in the galleries!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rey\u00f0arfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This little bit of Iceland has a fabulous coastline in the Eastfjords.&nbsp; The land divides Rey\u00f0arfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur and F\u00e1skr\u00fa\u00f0sfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur.&nbsp; Rey\u00f0arfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur is an even more beautiful fjord, but unfortunately the town of the same name is large and neighbours one of Iceland\u2019s big aluminium smelters.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The huge aluminium plant is quite shocking to see after so much untouched natural scenery.&nbsp; The Smelter is powered by hydroelectric power that is so abundant in this part of Iceland.&nbsp;
