Skutafoss waterfall in at the start of Iceland’s East fjords. The waterfall is about a mile deep in a valley away from the ring road. The river is home to several waterfalls, but Skutafoss is the most significant.
I took this photo on my first visit to Skutafoss. I drove though thick snow through the valley. I discovered Skutafoss in this frozen state. There is a cave beside the falls at ground level. I took this from on top of the cave roof. The background mountains can’t be seen at ground level.
The vertical orientation of the photo suits the jagged edge of the rocky platform that I was standing on and allowed me to include the mountains in the background. Although the top half of the image is quite bleak, I think is sets the scene perfectly in contrast to the high contrast, feature rich elements at my feet.
