I took this nature photo on the shores of the diamond beach near Jokulsarlon, where the ice can be so stunning.
At the Jökulsárlón Glacier Diamond Beach, the winter sunrise can be so colourful. When there is a colourful sky, I always study the more crystal ice for high quality reflections and refraction of the colourful light.
On this morning, I found these two icebergs which had washed up together on the beach. The right hand one was a really pure glacier ice and it was catching all the colours of the Arctic sky. The other piece of ice was also crystal but with a blue undertone. Between these icebergs was a little pool of water which was also reflecting the sunrise colours as well as the icebergs. I like the way these glacier icebergs interact with the natural light. The blue ice reflects the warm sunlight and the crystal ice allows the red to shine through.
Diamond Beach
Only a few few locations consistently test my photographic skills and serve as creative inspiration. One of them is the Diamond beach. There are some sections of pebbles and shingle on the glacier ice beach, but black sand dominates. You are staring south across the North Atlantic Ocean from the beach. The sun rises and sets over the ocean in the middle of winter. It’s amazing to see blue glacier ice on a black-sand beach. A photographer’s ideal scenario is to capture the image with an Arctic sunrise.
The diamond beach in East Iceland yields so much natural beauty, yet it is also fleeting and ephemeral. This makes natural photography so challenging, yet we can be rewarded with unique glacier landscape photos.
