This gem of crystal ice on the glacier ice beach was backlit by the rising sun. The crystal ice blocks the sun, and only a diffuse glow gets through. This powerful backlighting brings out the textures running through the glacier ice.
My choice of ice was careful. I chose this ice because it was just a few feet into the sea so larger waves could wash in front of it. This was important to capture the reflection of the glowing glacier ice.

The ice beach is a dynamic, natural location. Glacier ice shaped by wind, sun, ocean & rain creates ice sculptures that are always unique. The challenge for photographers is to hunt for the nicer ice. The crystal ice in this photo was important for the Contre Jour effect.
