This was an evening of persistent northern lights at the Glacier Lagoon called Jokulsarlon. The lagoon is forged by the retreating glacier and it is often filled with miniature icebergs that have fallen from the glacier shelf. When the lake is still there are fantastic reflections so it’s perfect for northern lights photography.

Northern Lights Folklore
The Northern Lights were important to the vikings. They believed that the the souls of fallen warriors on their way to Valhalla caused the aurora. Other cultures saw the Northern Lights as good or bad omens before a battle. In medieval times, pregnant women in Iceland were not allowed to whistle because they might be abducted by the northern lights. Native people in Greenland saw the aurora as a giant Walrus God in the heavens.
