Iceland is a special place. In my opinion it is not quite ready for human inhabitants and yet it has been inhabited for the last 1200 years. The Icelanders claim a pure heritage of Viking/ Norweigan blood, and many of them have the ability to trace their ancestors back to the settlers. Many of these settlers, for whatever reason brought them to Iceland, felt cheated when comparing the landscape to their native Norway. The landscape does not lend itself as easily to the eye as the famous Scandinavian fjords, the land is relatively new and has been broken by volcanic activity and the movement of huge glaciers. Yet, the magic of the Icelandic landscape hides itself well and is only accessible to those who dare to venture through rocky ravines, icy rivers and basalt deserts. Sure there are amazing locations close to the National Ring Road which can cause you to crash your Yaris, but the famously beautiful locations take a bit more ... hard work.
