Thinking of a photo workshop in Iceland? Hesitating? Don’t!
Sign up with Tony and Kiddi for the best experience. They are passionate accomplished photographers with an intimate knowledge of locations who worked their socks off for our group of six. Hands on tuition throughout ,transportation in comfortable specially modified 4wds, comfortable accommodation, good food and an introduction to Iceland await you. And a very competitive tariff to boot. I cant wait to do the summer camping trip next year. Highly recommended. Thanks Tony and Kiddi.

David Keljo March 2013

“I participated in the March 2013 winter workshop with Tony and Kiddi. I’m an amateur travel photographer who has done 4 workshops, each with different people in widely different places, over the past 12 years. This was by far the most enjoyable for a variety of reasons. Tony limited the workshop to 6 people, 3 in each jeep , which maximized comfort and flexibility. Tony is an excellent, highly knowledgeable photographer with excellent organizational skills. Kiddi, an accomplished photographer in his own right, brought an added depth of knowledge as a native Icelander. Between them they knew and understood all the sights we visited (most on the south coast between Vik and Hofn). They took pains to show us beautiful places and to help us explore them safely. If the weather changed they adapted the itinerary effectively. I didn’t know any of my travel companions before I got there and Tony and Kiddi worked to maintain excellent group chemistry. We had excellent weather for this particular workshop, so we didn’t spend a lot of time in post processing. Tony adapted his assistance to the level of the photographer. His technical tips were excellent. His critiques were always straightforward and always contained helpful insights. Tony’s observation that the excitement in sharing photographs lies in experiencing different visions set the tone for the workshop. For me it was time and money well spent.”

Thanks again for a great workshop,

David

Structure, strong color and intersecting lines are the graphic elements I employ to challenge the viewer to a labyrinthine experience, to loose themselves in a maze of lines and color. I use telephoto lenses as extraction devices to present patterns, shapes and textures in captivating schemes. Elements of typography feature in my work as well. Having studied the shapes and forms of letters throughout my life, I find myself discovering these shapes in the environment and presenting them to the viewer from different contexts.

My first passion is taking care of children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Photography is my hobby. I’m a scenic travel photographer who is particularly fond of mountains and water and fascinated by dusk and moonlight. I enjoy sharing my images with family and friends and am particularly pleased when my images make other people want to go to one of my favorite places.

I do have an occasionally updated photo stream on Flickr: MY FLICKR

It’s gonna blow, get there and wait for the eruption!

The rumbling of thunder a midst the veil of thick black ash plume puts things into perspective for you. Maybe we feel the ground shake and each time wonder what is going on down there. The thin crust of this planet has a leak and from this leak spring some of the deepest secrets of the universe right before our eyes… and yet we are still paralyzed by our lack of understanding and our senseless need to take pictures of it.

We take a picnic and your longest lens and visit some good vantage points.

Seasons: Running all year round.

Timings: The tour will start early evening in Summer. This trip may involve shooting through the night hours (22.00-06.00) and returning to Reykjavik at ‘Stupid o’clock’ in the morning. We will revert to regular hours towards September.

Hekla volcano has been making noises lately. She is a 10 year strato volcano who last erupted in 2001. Some eruptions before the Viking days were similar to a typical Indonesian volcano. She is connected to Eyjafjallajökull and Katla. She is a fairly predictable volcano and has been erupting at roughly 10 year intervals in recent centuries.

Locations and activities: We take a journey along some roads circling the volcano. There are a few nice locations, such as Hjálparfoss, Háifoss, the Þórsá river, the town of Hella and the village of Keldur. There are gentle landscapes and lava fields.

Feel the powerful silence of the immense Vatnjökull glacier. Öræfajökull and her majestic header of Hvannadalhnúkur towering over the networks of glacial rivers and flood strewn boulders. All reflected in the stillness of Jökulsarlon – the glacial lagoon.

Seasons: Running all year.

Timings: The tour might start around 20.00 in June and may revert to regular hours towards September. Winter start times are around 09.30. Mid summer: (June – August) This trip will involve shooting through the night hours (22.00-06.00) and sleeping in tents during the day. Winter: (September-April) we shoot regular hours which might include night shooting for Auroras and sunrise/set on the ice beach.

Locations: This popular multi-day tour includes Jökulsarlon, Höfn and the South coast. This option is to spread the trip over 3 days. Over the 3 days we can explore many of the great features along the south coast such as the big waterfalls and beautiful beaches. We are never far from the glacier lagoon, so we are in a good location if we are lucky enough to see auroras (winter) or to explore the lagoon through the midnight sunlight (Summer). Here we can also catch amazing images on the black sand beach with glacial ice. We visit Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Reynisdrengur, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Skaftafell, Jökulsarlon, Fjalsarlon, Höfn, Vesturhorn.
Price: Currently we are offering the tour for $1800. This for 3-4 passengers, but it doesn’t include the cost of food and accommodation.

Accommodation: We stay overnight at Hali guest house (winter) or Camp at Skaftafell (Summer)*. Your accommodation will be arranged for the duration of the tour, let us know your preferences.

This Summer tour cuts a big ‘S’ shaped curve through the middle of Iceland.

Vast stony deserts with mountain tracks designed by Whiskey drinkers lead to Iceland’s wildest geothermal hot-spots. Don’t forget your bathing costume (actually it wont really matter!!). Feel the ground tremble next to Europes most powerful waterfall. Cast your material possessions into the waterfall of the Gods and experience the best Whale Watching in Iceland from fabulous Husavik (original home of the Penis Museum).

Seasons: Running only from mid June to mid September (and can be subject to change).

Timings: The tour will start around 20.00 mid June. This trip will involve shooting through the night hours (22.00-06.00) and sleeping in tents during the day. We may revert to regular hours towards September. Accommodation may change to mountain huts and guesthouses towards September. The itinerary can be entirely flexible. 5 days is the suggested time frame. It could be done over a full week, doing the tour in less than 5 days would be challenging.

Locations and activities: We start with an evening tour of Geysir and Gullfoss before driving on Iceland’s notorious Kjöllurvegur. This is a rough mountain road which connects the North and South during the summer months. On Kjöllurvegur we have 2 impressive stops at the geothermal mountains of Kelingarfjöll and the hot-spring oasis of Hveravellir. We camp at Varmahlið.

We then have 3 full nights to explore the best locations in the North. Huge waterfalls such as Dettifoss work well with the sunrise. Ancient geological wonders such as Asbyrgi also work beautifully in the morning hours. We can experience some wild fumerals and boiling mud as well as relax in the Geothermal baths around Lake Myvatn.

Experiencing sunrises at these places can be hugely inspiring and because we are camping we really can follow the best of the midnight sun.

Accommodation: Mid summer will involve camping in tents. Accommodation may change to mountain huts and guesthouses towards September.

Price: We are offering this 5 day tour at $3000 USD. This is for up to 3 passengers. This price doesn’t include food and accommodation.

A 2 day adventure through Iceland’s most diverse landscapes.

Endless black sand deserts stretching from glacier capped volcanoes to the North Atlantic host veins of glacier melt-water. Huge lakes are home to giant chunks of glacial ice and seal colonies. The sheer cliff edges show the scars of glaciers and are home to countless waterfalls.

The trip along the South coast to the Vatnjökull region is an adventure packed with a wide variety of landscapes and nature.

Seasons: Running all year.

Timings:Summer start times will be early evening. We may be shooting all night and camping during the day – shooting all night again and returning to Reykjavik at stupid o’clock in the morning. Winter start times are around 09.30. We shoot all day – hopefully a couple of hours in the night. The shoot all through the second day and return to Reykjavik in the evening.

Summer: The tour will start around 20.00 mid June. This trip will involve shooting through the night hours (22.00-06.00) and sleeping in tents during the day. We may revert to regular hours towards September.
Winter: (September-April) The tour starts around 09.30 and may involve night shooting if conditions are right for Aurora Borealis.

The drive to Jökulsárlón is an amazing adventure, but too long to truly enjoy in a single day. One option is to spread the trip over 2 days. This popular overnight tour includes Jökulsarlon and the South coast. We are never far from the glacier lagoon, so we are in a good location if we are lucky enough to see auroras (winter) or to explore the lagoon through the midnight sunlight (Summer). Here we can also catch amazing images on the black sand beach with glacial ice.

Locations and activities: Over the 2 days we can explore many of the great features along the south coast such as the big waterfalls and beautiful beaches. We visit Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Reynisdrengur, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Skaftafell, Jökulsarlon, Fjalsarlon. Activities may include hiking, glacier hiking, ice-cave exploring, Lagoon boat trips, exhibitions and restaurants.

Accommodation: We stay overnight at Hali guest house (winter) or Camp at Skaftafell (Summer)*(*Note: some of these options will vary from Guide to Guide).

Price: Currently we are offering the workshop for $1200. This for 3-4 passengers. It doesn’t include the cost of food and accommodation.

Hveravellir is a beautiful geothermal Oasis in the middle of a huge stony desert. Getting there is the hard part as it requires hours of driving on very rough terrain through kjölur vegur. This is so rough that many guides don’t like to do this trip. If you survive this drive, you will be rewarded with one of Nature’s geothermal masterpieces.

Landmannalaugar is a natural gem in the Southern Highlands of Iceland.

The clay, painterly mountains and valleys of shale and streams at Landmannalaugar great the visitor, gently at first, and then all at once in a magnificent panorama. The route in is littered with red or grey tinder cones and their weirdly veins of moss winding to their summits. The park is more like a rock concert than base camp with tents, jeeps, bicycles and hardy hiking folk – so many in such a remote location. The area is a perfect hiking zone. A hot spot for hiking photography and camping, Landmannalaugar is a Geothermal hot spot with fantastic rhyolite rocks with colourful painterly appearance.

Locations and activities: Getting to the park requires a lot of driving on rough mountain roads. Although a lot can be seen from a car, passengers will be encouraged to hike through lava fields and up mountain paths to conquer stunning scenery. Our tour will take you in on one road and out on another to give you a continuing sense of movement. The route in may include standing on Mount Hekla -one of Iceland’s most famous volcanoes. Our photo guides are familiar with the area and know the best places to catch the best light and the best compositions. Other activities may include bathing in the geothermal pool at the base camp. The trip might include a visit to Haifoss if time permits.

All long tours are scheduled to get the best available light and may involve staying up all night in mid-summer.
Skötufjörður – An evening in the Westfjords

Summer: (June-August) Although there is no chance of Auroras during the Summer months, there is great access to the interior mountain regions where you can experience the magnificence of raw, volcanic landscapes in beautiful light…

Participants need to be prepared to camp and travel for long periods over rough terrain in a modified Jeep. Camping gear is supplied including Tents, sleeping bags, mattress, very basic cooking equipment. An extra charge may apply at the discretion of the instructor.

Pack your biggest camera bag, come and unzip ICELAND with us!
Kirkjufellsfoss

Winter: (September-April) In the Winter, travel is significantly more challenging and we are limited to maintained roads. Normally tours are limited to the South coast, but if conditions are good, we can explore the North of Iceland.

The limited daylight hours offer superb light and Winter weather provides no shortage of drama. The nights offer superb opportunities for star or aurora photography.

Bring your woolen long johns and we can freeze out the competition.

Hveravellir is a unique oasis in the stony deserts of Iceland’s interior.

This oasis includes a campsite with basic services, an incredible hot pool with a constant Geothermal feed. It is a location famously used by exiled criminals, where they could hide out in relative comfort.

To sit amongst the hot springs and feel the ground shake when the pressure underground builds, you actually feel that you are on a volcano. This is the honeycomb version of earth’s crust. This hostile area actually offers lots of comfort in the just bearably hot bath.

Photography
There are many light dependent photo stops on the way to Hveravellir. The road is called Kjölurvegur and is notoriously rough. It is possible to get there is a regular car, but be prepared to have some repairs when you return.

Photo hints:
observe the direction and strength of the steam in the geothermal area. Correct control can make or break a shot. If the steam is widespread and slow, try to avoid very long exposures, this will lead to milky white images. If the wind is strong, a long exposure can create a surreal effect.

Using grad filters or magic cloth can give good results, but I have found that the blue pool exposes very nicely with a cloudy sky.

Experience this yourself with either Day Tour, or Long Tour

Find photo resources in the area with Geotog.com
